Srinagar, May 20 (KNO): In a significant move, the President of India has empowered the Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh to exercise the powers of the State Government under the provisions of the Factories Act, 1948 within the said Union Territory.
In a notification, a copy of which is in possession of news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), the President has delegated powers to LG Ladakh under the Factories Act, 1948. “In pursuance of clause (1) of article 239 of the Constitution, the President hereby directs that the Lieutenant Governor of the Union territory of Ladakh shall, subject to the control of the President and until further order, exercise the powers and discharge the functions of the State Government under the provisions of the Factories Act, 1948 (63 of 1948), within the said Union territory,” reads the notification issued on Tuesday.
The Factories Act, 1948 has been enacted to safeguard worker welfare, regulate factory operations, and maintain labour standards.
It contains provisions on the health, safety, working hours, leave and welfare of workers; inspecting staff for factories; hazardous processes in factories; the employment of young persons (children and adolescents); and penalties for contravening the provisions of the Act—(KNO)
